iHerb

iHerb is a direct to consumer e-commerce retailer that has over 11 million customers in 185 countries across the world. I was hired as the first senior manager of the UX team to be a vocal advocate for making data-driven decisions, promote UX best practices, educate the product management teams on the best ways to work with designers, and guide the design team to improve the overall quality of work.

Strategy

I completed quarterly planning to align design priorities with business initiatives and reassessed regularly when business needs changed. I also communicated these priorities frequently with my team so they understood how each of their projects related to our top initiatives. In weekly meetings with the CEO and VP of customer experience, I reported on project progress and engaged in discussions about strategy and any urgent requests that needed to be addressed.

User Experience & Interface

In just one year, my team and I have completed over 500 UX tickets with projects ranging from improvements on the existing UI like the global nav, corporate site, product detail pages and more - to the creation of completely new features like guest checkout, wellness quizzes, and preorder functions.

Process & Comms

The team I manage is fully remote with team members in the US (across multiple time zones) and China who specialize in UX and UI design, UX research, and customer experience.

In my first several months with iHerb, I educated product owners and leadership on the importance of UX design, writing, and research and evangelized UX best practices. Many of the product owners specialized in highly technical backend projects and had never worked with designers. I coached them on how to develop requirements for design tickets, identify different aspects for multivariate and A/B testing, and how to facilitate final design QA of pre-production code. I also hired a project manager to help institute processes to work across teams like marketing, development, and product to achieve organizational goals. We also introduced project management fundamentals for the design team and migrated them from Asana to JIRA and Confluence for documentation.
